Safety Is Our Highest Priority
United We Ride is a fundraising event, but it’s also a large-scale ride, which means a lot of motorcycles on the road at one time. We endeavour to make the ride as safe as possible for all participants of the ride as well as those around us. We have enlisted the help of www.riskfacilitator.com to highlight safety issues and address them. Email info@unitedwerideanz.com for any queries or feedback.
How the Ride Works
Once you have registered your profile, prepared your bike and the day has arrived, it's time to roll-out as one.
There are many components to a UWR ride including volunteer corner markers, mid group markers, first aid riders and support vehicles. These people are all giving up their time to make the ride run smoother and safer for you. So please treat them with the respect they deserve, give them a smile or wave and thank them where you can.
The most important points are:
- To follow instructions
- Ride behind the ride leader
- No overtaking
- Follow the speed of the ride. It’s not a race. It’s a representation of community.
What is the role of the dealership/Ride Champion?
The dealership and their Ride Champion is officially authorised from Harley-Davidson to organize the event in their respective city or town. They are the ONLY ones allowed to run a UWR event.
While passionate and enthusiastic, it is important to remember they're doing their best to make the event and ride as successful as possible for you. Most of them are donating their time in aid of showing what our community is about.
Riding Safely: Important Points
Low-Speed Limits
The ride has been designed by the dealership and Ride Champion to take in the best of the local area. This may mean it runs through the main street or busy areas of your city. Please respect the speed limits and remember there may be people on the side of the road watching or generally using the road. Again, this is not a race — you will not impress anyone with your speed. UWR is a show of solidarity and community to raise money and awareness for our great friends at The Salvation Army and those who rely on them for a better quality of life.
Helmets Are Mandatory
All riders must wear helmets that are legally compliant within their state/country. No helmet, no ride. Simple.
Obey Signs & Street Lights
- Do not block any roads without the consent of local authorities.
- Do not run red lights.
- Give way signs must be followed.
- Be cognizant of pedestrian crossings and high foot traffic areas.
Strictly No Burnouts!
Do not do stunts, burnouts, bike surfing or ride recklessly – it won’t impress anyone except the intake officer at the impound lot. This is not appropriate behaviour for this event. We ask all riders to set the best example. This event is a great way of combatting often negative motorcycling stereotypes — not leaning into them. If you’re spotted doing any of these, you’ll be asked to leave and your registration will be recorded and passed on to relevant authorities.
Phones
As per road rules in your state or region, phones are not to be used whilst riding — unless mounted to your handlebars with an approved phone mount. We recommend the best in the business, Quad Lock, who have also been kind enough to give all registered riders 20% off on their website. So if you don’t have a phone mount yet, we recommend getting one — especially for navigation.
As for taking pics, shoot to your heart’s content… when you’re off the bike! Leave the action shots to the professionals — there’ll be plenty of them across a number of the rides.
Ensuring Safety: What safety procedures does UWR use?
Rides are required to be short in length and slow in speed
A UWR roll is not a typical motorcycle ride. We are raising funds for The Salvation Army and showing the rest of the world what it means to be a part of the Harley-Davidson community. Thus, they won’t be all-day iron rides or mountain belters, but rather something more low-key that takes in the best parts of your local area and runs for roughly an hour. All rides will leave from the dealership leading the ride.
Don't forget to listen to the Ride Safety Speech
It is required that our Ride Champions give a ride safety speech. We have a fixed start time (9am WA, 11am NSW, 1pm NZ) so please take this into consideration when planning your arrival time. The dealerships will be hosting pre-ride events, so get there early and enjoy the festivities — but this will also ensure you’re present for the mandatory ride safety briefing.
Motorcycle Breakdowns
Each ride will endeavour to have a support vehicle that has the capability to load up a broken-down motorcycle. The UWR Support Vehicle stays at the back of the ride to sweep up any bikes along the way. They will drop the bike off back at the starting dealership, where it becomes the participant’s responsibility to pick it up (or have it repaired while there).
